It was identified and characterized by the Cohen laboratory at USC and described in a series of publications beginning in 2015 as part of a broader family of mitochondrial-derived peptides (MDPs).Research on MOTS-c focuses on its roles in metabolic regulation, AMPK signaling, insulin-sensitivity research in animal models, and exercise physiology.
